Summer Youth Program
This is Digital DIY’s first foray into youth education and we are super-stoked!
Over the 8-week course we hope to introduce and/or expand your understanding of microcontrollers, transducers, multimedia assets inside open-source game engines, and digital communication protocols, all in the service of fully-interactive tech-based self-expression. Did most of that last sentence read like gibberish? That’s no problem. It’s the last time we’ll use clunky jargon, even for comedic effect.
We’re assuming zero knowledge starting out and ask only that you come in with an open mind and a willingness to learn. We’ve also strived to make this course math-lite, since tech should be leveraged by all types of nerds, not just those left-brained savants.
What You’ll Learn:#
- How to use tech to effect the real world (turn on a light, spin a motor, release a valve)
- How to sense things from the outside world (a button pushed, a knob turned, a loud noise)
- How to program computers to move images around a screen and make noise
- How to make all the above seen, heard and felt by audiences big and small
- How to put that all together for some truly magical interactive art
The complete syllabus is here.
What You Won’t Learn:#
- How to create the compelling pictures and sound to incorporate into your projects
- How to make small talk at parties and network in important circles
- How to raise class consciousness and hasten the historically-inevitable proletariat revolution¹
When It Happens:#
Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, June 2nd to July 30th (pizza will be provided)
Where It Happens:#
All classes will take place at the Digital Garage, 934 Cleveland Ave
What You Need:#
- Curiosity
- A laptop will let you continue working on things at home, but we can accomodate anyone that doesn’t have one
What It Costs:#
We’re offering a tiered pricing structure. If you live in Milo-Grogan or Linden, it’s free. We don’t want your money. Just bring a piece of mail to show where you live, and that’s enough. What we really want is to build up young digital interactive artists that live in our backyard.
If you go to Columbus Public Schools, it’s a recommended donation of $320 for the 8-week course. Pay what you can, and thanks for investing in public infrastructure!
For everyone else, it’s $320. If you’re stoked to be a part of this but that’s too much scratch, reach out. Scholarships are available!
If you already know some of this stuff, or just can’t commit to that much of the summer, individual classes are available for $25 (same free/donation/priced structure as above). Please contact us beforehand, so that we can make sure it’s worth everyone’s while.
